Ayous is a tropical hardwood from Cameroon.
The stock I have has been thermally aged to give it durability outdoors without treatment.
It is light and soft and I would say it is the easiest timber to carve that I have come across. So I am particularly recommending it for beginners or carvers who are finding their joints getting a bit painful.
The wood is mid brown varying from yellowish to a redish brown. somewhere between Iroko and Cuban Mahogany. It will darken with age, or if outdoors it will silver.
Easy to carve and sand it is only moderate to poor for fine detail.
If this proves popular I can source other sizes including some blocks 65mm by 240mm
